The Australian Defence Force (ADF) is closely monitoring three Chinese warships, which have been observed approximately 150 nautical miles from Sydney. These vessels, identified as the Jiangkai-class frigate Hengyang, the Renhai-class cruiser Zunyi, and the Fuchi-class replenishment ship Weishanhu, were initially detected off the coast of north-east Queensland and have been moving down the eastern coastline.

In a statement, ADF officials confirmed their ongoing surveillance of the Chinese flotilla operating near Australia, emphasising their commitment to monitoring all maritime activities within the nation’s Exclusive Economic Zone. Australia’s Defence Minister, Richard Marles, stated that Navy and Air Force resources have been deployed to ensure comprehensive observation of the task group’s movements, affirming the country’s right to conduct such operations safely and professionally.

While Australia acknowledges the right of all nations to navigate international waters as per the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, these warships mark a notable development, representing the furthest south that the Chinese navy has sailed along the eastern coast outside of an official visit. The Royal Australian Navy is reportedly maintaining a watchful presence concerning the situation.
