Hundreds of residents gathered outside the Gold Coast council chambers to protest against the controversial “view tax”, which has led to rate increases of up to 50% for apartment owners. Approximately 200 individuals participated in the march, voicing their opposition to the council’s decision. The council justifies the hike by claiming it ensures a fairer distribution of rates among property owners, but demonstrators argue there was a lack of consultation and that a small percentage of residents are unfairly subsidising the majority.
Mayor Tom Tate defended the adjustments, stating that they reflect property valuations and the ability of property owners to pay, rather than being solely about views. He dismissed the possibility of reversing the decision, instead focusing on future rate increases that align with inflation. Despite the council’s stance, the protesters remain committed to their cause and plan to continue their demonstrations next month, expressing dissatisfaction with the council’s approach and advocating for a reassessment of the rate changes.
