The Malaya, a cherished South Asian restaurant with a view of Sydney Harbour, is set to close its King Street Wharf location after 23 years of service. Operators Isabella, Duan, and Givie Wong will host their final service on March 29, before transitioning to Harry Seidler’s Grosvenor Place on George Street in April. The move marks a full-circle journey for the restaurant, which was originally established on George Street in 1963 by Wong Tai See, a Hong Kong migrant.
The Malaya has long been a staple for students, journalists, and professionals in the CBD, with Wong’s son, Lance, relocating the restaurant to King Street Wharf in 1996. Now, the establishment is managed by the next generation, Isabella and Duan, who express their gratitude to patrons and reflect on the restaurant’s impact over the years.
In a social media statement, they described the move as a “homecoming” and expressed their appreciation for the community that has supported them. They invite guests to join them for a few final meals before closing, noting their fondness for the memories made at their King Street Wharf home.
