The Premier of Victoria, Jacinta Allan, refrained from discussing the timeline of recent events following a critical vote of no confidence in Chief Commissioner Shane Patton, indicating that discussions had taken place over the weekend. Allan emphasised the importance of confidentiality regarding these discussions. Approximately 87% of police officers expressed a lack of confidence in Patton in a recent survey, which Allan noted was a significant message from the police members for a new direction in leadership. Patton announced his resignation, stating that, while it was a difficult decision, it was necessary for fresh leadership. He reflected on his privilege in leading Victoria Police and the rewarding nature of the job. Former homicide detective Charlie Bezzina suggested Patton had been “let down” by the government, describing his tenure as inheriting a “poison chalice.” Bezzina and crime reporter John Silvester both highlighted the political pressures faced by Patton, implying that he was unfairly blamed for systemic issues beyond his control. Rick Nugent, the Emergency Management Commissioner, will serve as the acting Police Chief Commissioner in the interim.
