A tragic crowd crush at a railway station in New Delhi resulted in the deaths of at least 15 individuals, including 10 women and 3 children, as they attempted to board trains to the Maha Kumbh Mela, the world’s largest religious gathering. Delhi police’s Deputy Commissioner, KPS Malhotra, reported that the incident occurred late Saturday due to delays in train services and an unexpected influx of passengers. He noted that the situation spiralled out of control for approximately 10 to 15 minutes.
Many victims were believed to be en route to Prayagraj for the event, where an estimated 400 million people are expected over the six-week festival. This incident follows a recent crowd disaster at the same gathering, prompting significant concern.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his distress over the fatalities and extended condolences to the bereaved families, assuring that authorities are providing assistance to those impacted. Union Minister of Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw, also conveyed his sorrow over the unfortunate event and confirmed that emergency measures, including the deployment of four trains for evacuations, have been initiated.
The police are currently managing the situation, which is under control following the chaos.
