Ludvig Åberg triumphed at the Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines, showcasing remarkable recovery from a recent illness that had seen him withdraw from the Farmers Insurance Open. Overcoming a 10-pound weight loss, Åberg birdied four of the final six holes to secure a one-shot victory over Maverick McNealy. This tournament moved to Torrey Pines from Riviera due to wildfires in Los Angeles, but Åberg seized the opportunity on a course he favours.
McNealy started strong, birdieing eight of the first eleven holes and leading by three shots on the 17th tee, only to finish with a pair of pars for a score of 64. After the intense finish, McNealy praised Åberg’s exceptional performance.
Åberg’s win earned him AUD 6.3 million, marking his third career victory since turning professional, elevating him to No. 4 in the world rankings. Notable competitors included Scottie Scheffler, who faltered with a disappointing 76 to tie for third after initially closing the gap and Rory McIlroy, who struggled with his putting, finishing with a 72.
The tournament also paid tribute to Tiger Woods’ late mother, Kultida, with players wearing red buttons bearing symbols of love while Woods watched from the broadcast booth, having withdrawn from the event.
