Wallabies coach Joe Schmidt has announced his decision to step down following this year’s Rugby Championship, citing the need for more family time as the primary reason. Despite Rugby Australia’s hopes that the New Zealander would remain in charge until the 2027 Rugby World Cup, Schmidt expressed his desire to prioritise his family, especially considering his son’s health challenges. Reflecting on his time with the Wallabies, Schmidt shared that he has truly enjoyed the role, describing it as a privilege filled with excitement. Although lamenting the end of his tenure, he acknowledged the importance of concluding his contract on his terms.
Schmidt’s current contract, initially set to end after the British and Irish Lions tour, has been extended until October. He views the conclusion of the Rugby Championship as a suitable point for transition rather than after a crucial tour match. As he prepares for the challenge against the Lions, Schmidt expressed nerves regarding their formidable reputation but is also eager to assess the developing talent within his squad. He emphasised the importance of fostering skills like quick decision-making, teamwork, and effective kicking, hoping to enhance the team’s depth as the Super Rugby season unfolds.
