Kevin Walters expressed his surprise at being dismissed as coach of the Brisbane Broncos, stating he believed the team was on the path to success. After four seasons, during which the Broncos failed to reach the finals three times, Walters’ tenure ended following a lacklustre 2022 season that saw the club finish 12th. The 2023 season, however, marked a resurgence as the team reached the grand final and nearly won their first premiership since 2006.
During an emotional press conference, Walters revealed how he felt prepared for future seasons and outlined plans for 2025, having already hired new assistants and made necessary changes. He had a “bad feeling” about the direction things were heading and contacted his manager about his concerns, which ultimately led to the club’s decision to let him go.
In reflecting on his time with the Broncos, Walters acknowledged the need for improvement and took full responsibility for their performance. He wanted to directly address the fans, demonstrating his commitment to transparency. Despite the setback, he remains optimistic about the future, stating his determination to coach again and actively seeking new opportunities within the NRL.
