A vehicle struck a group of people in Munich on Thursday, resulting in injuries to at least 15 individuals, according to reports from German media. The incident coincided with heightened security measures as the city prepared for the Munich Security Conference, which was set to commence the following day, welcoming attendees such as US Vice President JD Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Police confirmed that the driver was apprehended and stated there was no ongoing threat. A large-scale police operation was initiated around the central train station to investigate the circumstances surrounding the event. Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene, with one recalling that police had fired at the car as emergency services responded to the situation.

At the time of the incident, a demonstration by the service workers’ union, Verdi, was occurring nearby, but it remained uncertain whether any protesters were among those injured. The union indicated that they had not received information regarding the specifics of the event.

The city is in a state of shock as it grapples with the impact of the event just before a significant international gathering.
