PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan recently indicated that a meeting with former President Donald Trump is a step towards a potential agreement with the LIV Golf series, financed by Saudi Arabia. Monahan emphasised that the primary focus is on reunifying the tour, a goal shared with Australian golfer Adam Scott, who is on the PGA Tour board. Their discussions included the possibility of the Saudi Public Investment Fund becoming a minority investor, aiming to integrate top players who had defected to LIV.
Rory McIlroy, a past critic of LIV, expressed support for reunification, urging players to overlook past grievances and work collectively for the benefit of the sport. He acknowledged that while LIV disrupted the golfing world, it has also increased prize money, citing the Genesis Invitational’s substantial purse as indicative of the positive influence of competition.
Monahan and Yasir Al-Rumayyan of the PIF seem aligned in their vision, but a confirmed deal remains pending. McIlroy, involved in the negotiations, is optimistic about potential progress by 2026, suggesting that the European Tour should take a more central role in shaping a global calendar. As it stands, players from both tours only compete together during major championships.
