Virgin Australia is advancing its plans to allow small pets—cats and dogs—in the cabin on select domestic flights, following their announcement last year. Although the airline initially expected to secure regulatory approval from the Civil Aviation Safety Authority within 12 months, the process is taking longer than anticipated. A spokesperson mentioned that they are collaborating with regulators and stakeholders to ensure a safe and compliant experience for all passengers.

The airline intends to designate two rows on select flights as “pet-friendly”, accommodating animals in soft carriers weighing under 8kg that fit under the seat. Pets must be older than eight weeks, and only one pet per person will be permitted. The additional cost for bringing a pet onboard will range from $100 to $150, with reservations handled through the Guest Contact Centre.

Some Australian airports, including Melbourne and Sydney, are upgrading their facilities to include pet relief areas in anticipation of the increased number of furry travellers. Virgin Australia’s initiative reflects the demand from pet owners, as nearly 70% of Australian households have pets. Chief Executive Jayne Hrdlicka emphasised the significance of this service for a considerable portion of the population, viewing it as a successful model already proven internationally.
