Warren Gatland’s exit as Wales coach introduces significant uncertainty in Australia’s quest for a new head coach to follow Joe Schmidt, whose contract expires in October. Gatland’s departure comes amidst a troubling 14-match losing streak for Wales, sealed by a 22-15 defeat to Italy.

This shake-up may influence Australia’s coaching considerations, potentially complicating their pursuit of candidates like Michael Cheika. La Rochelle coach Ronan O’Gara has indicated interest in the Wallabies position but has ruled himself out for Wales.

Matt Sherratt will fill the vacancy for the remainder of the Six Nations, following Gatland’s mutual consent departure after discussions with the Wales Rugby Union about his future. The Welsh side is facing the prospect of finishing last for a second consecutive year in the Six Nations, a first in the tournament’s history.

Gatland, who enjoyed a successful first term with Wales, culminating in multiple Six Nations titles and leading the Lions on three tours, expressed gratitude for the support he received. He acknowledged the challenges of translating potential into performance, declaring, “I’ve reached the end of this particular chapter.” The WRU aims for a permanent coach before the upcoming tour to Japan.
