Netanyahu Warns of Renewed Conflict in Gaza if Hostage Release Fails by Saturday

Hamas announced on Monday and Tuesday its decision to postpone the release of three hostages, alleging that Israel has not adhered to the ceasefire terms, including inadequate provision of aid to Gaza. President Donald Trump has urged Israel to demand the unconditional release of all remaining hostages by Saturday, though it is unclear if Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu’s warnings pertain to just the three hostages or all held in Gaza.

In response, Netanyahu instructed the military to increase troop presence along the Gaza border and to prepare for all possibilities if the hostages aren’t released as agreed. Israel’s emergency plan stemmed from a four-hour meeting focusing on Hamas’ threats, which jeopardise the tenuous ceasefire in place for nearly three weeks.

Hamas has previously released 21 hostages in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. Tensions escalated further after Trump suggested that any Palestinians relocated from Gaza would not be allowed to return. Amid these developments, the potential for renewed conflict looms by March if a solution for the complicated second phase of the ceasefire, involving further hostage releases and an indefinite truce extension, isn’t reached.

As Israel grapples with the ramifications of conflict, the dynamic landscape, with thousands of displaced Palestinians now returning to some areas of Gaza, poses new operational challenges for military actions.
