A performer during the Super Bowl halftime show in New Orleans has been permanently banned from NFL events after displaying Sudanese and Palestinian flags in protest. The individual was part of Kendrick Lamar’s set and acted without prior coordination with the production team. The NFL confirmed that the protest occurred late in Lamar’s performance and briefly appeared on the broadcast.

Security swiftly detained the protester, who was described by police as an adult Black man. Although he was ejected from the stadium, authorities stated he would not face arrest or additional penalties since no charges were filed.

The protest is understood to highlight the humanitarian crises in Sudan and Gaza, regions grappling with ongoing conflicts. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) praised the protester’s actions, stating that such acts remind Americans of the suffering caused by foreign policies.

The situation in Gaza has seen severe casualties and displacements due to recent hostilities, similar to the devastating impact of the civil war in Sudan, which has escalated since April 2023. Both conflicts have elicited global concern, with accusations of war crimes against involved parties. The NFL confirmed that the protest was unsanctioned and unfurled without any official knowledge during rehearsals, reinforcing the unexpected nature of the demonstration.
