Steve Smith recently praised Marnus Labuschagne amid the latter’s uncertain bid to secure his spot for the World Test Championship final. Smith has made a significant comeback, showcasing his batting prowess by earning the player of the series award after Australia’s first Test series victory in Sri Lanka since 2011. Since ending a 24-inning century drought, Smith has impressively scored four Test centuries in just eight innings, including notable scores of 101 in Brisbane and 141 in Galle, reaching the illustrious 10,000-run milestone in Test cricket.

Reflecting on his revival, Smith acknowledged the role of luck in cricket, noting how a dropped catch early in his innings allowed him to build momentum. He emphasised the importance of confidence and rhythm in his game, attributing his success to diligent practice and an understanding of the sport’s inherent ups and downs.

Labuschagne, while struggling with consistency, managed to contribute with an unbeaten 26 in the decisive match against Sri Lanka, despite recent poor form. Smith reassured that Labuschagne is not out of form, highlighting his strong training sessions and believing that runs are imminent for him. The Australian team is set to face South Africa next, aiming to defend their World Test Championship title at Lord’s in June.
