North Queensland is facing severe flooding, prompting the federal government to expand financial assistance for affected towns. Warnings of minor to major flooding have been issued from Cairns to Rockhampton following substantial rainfall, with some areas recording up to 153mm in just 24 hours. Key rivers, including the Herbert, Haughton, and Burdekin Rivers, are experiencing significant inundation.

In Giru, local disaster management has urged residents to seek higher ground as flood levels rise to 2.93m, with predictions of reaching 3m. The federal government has also introduced personal hardship payments to affected regions, offering $180 for individuals and up to $900 for families to assist with emergency essentials. Townsville, Cardwell, and Ingham are among those bracing for up to 250mm of additional rain this weekend.

Over a week into the flooding crisis, efforts to supply food, water, and restore power continue, although the situation has tragically resulted in two fatalities. Emergency services, including additional SES volunteers and police, are actively working to ensure community safety amidst the ongoing severe weather, with hopes that conditions may improve by Monday.
