A submerged car has baffled residents in Bunbury, Western Australia, after it was spotted in a lagoon by staff at the Dolphin Discovery Centre (DDC) using drones. The vehicle was located on the ocean floor near the Leschenault Estuary while DDC personnel were searching for dolphins.
DDC executive manager Axel Grossman shared concerns about potential environmental hazards, citing the risk of fuel and oil leaks impacting local marine life, including dolphins. The alarming sight prompted the DDC to alert local authorities and police. Fortunately, Water Police confirmed that there were no bodies inside the vehicle.
The car, believed to have been underwater for some time, poses a navigational risk to boats, leading Grossman to express hope for its swift removal. Despite multiple parties being informed, including the WA Department of Transport, which acknowledged recent awareness of the vehicle, the precise responsibility for its removal remains unclear.
The Department noted that, although the car has not been deemed a navigational hazard, it will evaluate the situation and coordinate with relevant agencies to ensure it is addressed. The City of Bunbury has also been approached for comment.
