Brad Donald has stepped down as head coach of the Jillaroos amidst controversy surrounding player selections and his conduct. His resignation follows criticism for excluding Dally M Medal winner Olivia Kernick from the squad for the upcoming Pacific Championships, alongside an investigation into an alleged inappropriate outburst directed at a journalist.
In a statement released by the NRL, which also announced Jess Skinner as the interim coach, appreciation was expressed for Donald’s significant contributions in leading the Jillaroos to become the top-ranked team globally and World Cup champions.
The controversy centres on the baffling decision to omit Kernick, who had a standout performance, including scoring two tries in her team’s recent grand final victory. Despite her prior achievements, including starting all three Origin games last year, Donald’s justification for excluding her left many questioning his judgement.
League commentator Greg Alexander voiced his disbelief, emphasising that Donald could not have accurately assessed Kernick’s performance if he claimed she started on the bench for the Origin matches.
As the Jillaroos prepare for their test against England on March 1 in Las Vegas, Kernick has been included in the squad, signalling a potential shift in the team’s direction under Skinner’s leadership.
