Melbourne has secured the rights to host the inaugural regular-season NFL game in Australia, outbidding Sydney and Perth. The highly anticipated event is set for 2026 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) and will feature the Los Angeles Rams, who will forfeit one of their nine home games that season. Although the opposing team and date have yet to be confirmed, early reports suggest the Philadelphia Eagles may also play in Australia.

NFL executive Peter O’Reilly emphasised this expansion as a significant move towards establishing the league as a global sport. He highlighted Melbourne’s strong existing fanbase as a key reason for the city’s selection. Discussions had previously included Perth and Sydney before Melbourne emerged as the preferred choice.

L.A. Rams president Kevin Demoff expressed enthusiasm for participating, viewing the event as a unique opportunity for the franchise. O’Reilly mentioned this game is part of a broader commitment to international growth, indicating that while matches may not occur annually, there will be ongoing collaboration with Victoria.

The NFL’s journey in Australia began three years ago, and its efforts to foster local interest included the establishment of an office and an academy. Commissioner Roger Goodell reiterated the league’s intent to deepen its global footprint through this venture. Jordan Mailata, a former rugby player now with the Eagles, voiced his hopes for increased NFL visibility in Australia.
