Jahrome Hughes expressed surprise at his return for the grand final, having thought his season was over after suffering a broken arm in Round 27. The 2024 Dally M Medallist sustained the injury just 30 minutes into his comeback from a dislocated shoulder during a tackle on Broncos player Brendan Piakura. Despite his fears of being sidelined for the year, Hughes was back in action after 22 days, playing a crucial role as the Storm overcame the Sharks to secure a spot in the grand final—an achievement for the team, marking their sixth appearance in a decade.
Reflecting on his injury, Hughes recalled immediately notifying his wife of his concerns about his season ending, saying, “I still pinch myself that I’m in another grand final.” He praised the team’s medical staff and the surgeon for their assistance, acknowledging the unexpected possibility of returning so soon after surgery.
In the match against Cronulla, Hughes excelled, scoring a try and making eight tackle busts, showcasing his capabilities with the boot as well. His participation allowed coach Craig Bellamy to field a robust lineup, seeing his full-strength spine for only the eighth time this season.
Hughes described his rehabilitation process as straightforward, dismissing any suggestions of unconventional treatments. He highlighted how relieved he was when he removed the bandage after surgery, surprised by how well the injury was healing and the minimal scarring. Initially worried about stiffness in his wrist, he focused on regaining movement and strength, which proved vital to his recovery.
As the Storm prepares to face the Broncos in the premiership decider, Hughes is eager to contribute one last time this season, feeling enthusiastic about the upcoming challenge.
