Australians suffering from a rare type of lung cancer can now access a crucial medication, Retevmo, at a significantly reduced price. Previously priced at $10,000 monthly, patients will now only pay $30 per prescription following its listing on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS).

Ian Hill, a father of two, experienced a devastating diagnosis after seeking medical advice for a persistent cough; scans revealed he had Stage 4 lung cancer. He endured harsh chemotherapy, which left him bedridden and unable to care for his children. Fortunately, genetic testing identified a rare mutation, making him eligible for Retevmo, which has minimal side effects compared to chemotherapy.

Medical oncologist Dr Tom John noted that this drug could save patients between $100,000 and $200,000 annually, easing financial burdens. Health Minister Mark Butler asserted that the PBS listing will provide hope for around 130 patients each year. Ian reflects on the transformative impact of the treatment, stating, “It means that the money… can be used to make memories and enjoy the time with my family,” highlighting the newfound freedom to live life without the financial strain of medical costs.
