Tropical Storm Humberto has developed in the Atlantic Ocean, coinciding with Hurricane Gabrielle, which is advancing towards the Azores Islands, according to US meteorologists.

A hurricane warning is currently in effect for the Azores as Gabrielle poses the risk of severe conditions starting Thursday. The National Hurricane Centre in Miami reports that this Category 2 storm is expected to weaken yet may still deliver considerable coastal flooding and generate high waves across the volcanic archipelago. Rainfall could reach up to 13 centimetres, particularly impacting central and western regions of the islands.

At the latest update, Hurricane Gabrielle was positioned around 1,625 kilometres to the west of the Azores, boasting maximum sustained winds of 160 km/h and moving eastwards at 45 km/h. The storm’s effects are extending beyond the islands, with dangerous surf and rip currents predicted along the US East Coast, particularly from North Carolina northwards and along the Atlantic coastline of Canada.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Humberto is located approximately 885 kilometres east-northeast of the northern Leeward Islands, exhibiting maximum winds of 65 km/h. It’s anticipated to impact the eastern US coast with wind speeds reaching 63 km/h in the next five days.

In the Pacific, Hurricane Narda has maintained its strength as a Category 2 storm, moving away from Mexico with sustained winds of about 160 km/h. At present, it is situated about 900 kilometres south-southwest of the southern Baja California peninsula, advancing westwards at 16 km/h. While no coastal warnings are currently issued due to its offshore trajectory, Narda’s swells may result in rough surf and rip currents threatening some areas of coastal Mexico. Forecasts indicate that the hurricane could weaken before potentially restrengthening later this week.

Authorities and residents in affected regions are advised to stay vigilant as these storms progress, ensuring safety measures are in place against their anticipated impacts.
