The exclusion of Sam Konstas from both Tests against Sri Lanka has raised eyebrows, particularly for former Australian captain Michael Clarke. Initially omitted from the first Test, selectors opted for Travis Head to partner Usman Khawaja as an opener. Head subsequently scored a brisk 57 runs, contributing significantly to Australia’s victory. Ahead of the second Test, Konstas was sent back home to focus on the Sheffield Shield.

On the ESPN podcast Around the Wicket, Clarke expressed his disappointment, suggesting that the series offered an ideal opportunity for Konstas to showcase his talent. He noted that the young player, who had demonstrated promise, deserved a chance to develop in international conditions—especially given the context of the Sri Lankan pitch.

While acknowledging that selecting Head was a sound decision, Clarke highlighted the risk of losing multiple senior players at once—a scenario he witnessed during his own career that dramatically affected the team’s performance. He emphasised the importance of gradually integrating younger talent without overwhelming the squad, advocating for Konstas to be included in both the Sri Lanka and upcoming West Indies series as a valuable learning experience in the pursuit of sustained team success.
