Toby Sexton will don the No.7 jersey for the Bulldogs this season, but his long-term prospects remain uncertain as emerging talent Mitchell Woods poses a significant challenge. After a standout performance last year that led the Bulldogs to their first finals appearance in eight years, Sexton established himself as the team’s preferred halfback under coach Cameron Ciraldo.
Despite their commendable season, Canterbury’s playoff run ended in heartbreak with a narrow defeat to Manly. Reflecting on the match, Sexton acknowledged the lessons learned, particularly in managing crucial moments. He registered a career-high 12 try assists during the season and hopes his solid form has solidified his position within the squad.
Woods, a highly touted young player, has already joined the top 30 roster despite recently finishing school. Sexton, who had a similar trajectory starting with the Gold Coast Titans, praised Woods for his commitment and work ethic.
While Sexton’s current contract is up at the end of this season, he expressed contentment with his role at the club, stating he thrives in the supportive environment at Belmore. Looking ahead, he remains focused solely on his performance as the Bulldogs gear up to face their rivals, St George Illawarra, in the season opener on March 8.
