Why Instagram and Facebook Users Are Discovering They’ve Unexpectedly Followed Donald Trump

Many social media users were surprised to find themselves suddenly following Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance after the recent presidential transition. Complaints have arisen, as some users reported difficulties in unfollowing these accounts, despite previous support for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. Posts from the new administration’s official accounts are now flooding their feeds.

The situation stems from a standard policy by Meta (formerly Facebook) and X (formerly Twitter), which mandates that the official POTUS and VP accounts transfer to new officeholders while retaining their prior followers. Meta clarified that followers are not automatically added; rather, the accounts are managed by the White House and change content with each administration.

Users have also observed an uptick in Trump-related content suggestions, attributed to Meta’s recent policy shift that reintroduced political content recommendations after previously avoiding them. While reports of glitches—such as difficulties in searching for #democrats—pile up, Meta has stated these technical issues are unrelated to politics and are being addressed.

As the administration transitions, users are advised to be patient, as follow requests may experience delays during this period. The change in political content and account management is part of a familiar procedure during such transitions.
