The federal government is introducing a $10,000 allowance for construction apprentices to stimulate participation in the struggling building industry. This financial support, aimed at tradies who must live away from home, will be dispensed in $2,000 increments alongside their salaries. Eligible apprentices include bricklayers, electricians, plumbers, and carpenters.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese highlighted the challenge faced by new carpentry apprentices, who often earn a mere two-thirds of the minimum wage, making it difficult for them to afford essential tools and gear. In his address at the National Press Club, he expressed concern that many apprentices find better financial prospects in alternative jobs, which ultimately diminishes the workforce in construction.

As the election approaches, Albanese is keen to address rising living costs, recognising it as a significant voter concern. In contrast, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton placed blame for the apprentice shortage on the current Labor government, asserting that the decline in apprenticeship numbers has contributed to the housing crisis.

Dutton proposed tax deductions for small business meals and entertainment as part of his election plan, while Albanese dismissed this as a burden on taxpayers, suggesting it benefits only a select few in the corporate sector.
