Former federal Greens leader Adam Bandt has been appointed as the new chief executive of the Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF), effective from the start of next year. This announcement comes a few months after Bandt lost his seat in a significant election setback for the Greens.

In his new role, Bandt expressed his enthusiasm for leading the well-regarded climate and environment organisation during a crucial period, stating, “It is a true privilege to help lead Australia’s most respected voice for nature and climate at such a critical time.” He emphasised the current environmental challenges, noting, “Climate collapse is beginning, nature is in crisis and this is the parliament that can avoid extinction. This could be the best parliament ever for nature and climate. We’re setting politicians a test we hope they meet.”

Bandt’s political career saw him become the first Greens candidate to secure a federal lower-house seat in Melbourne in 2010. He rose to leadership of the party in 2020 and successfully guided the Greens to their best federal election results in 2022, adding representation in the House of Representatives and Senate. However, the 2025 election proved disastrous for the party, with Bandt losing his seat despite a consistent primary vote.

The chair of ACF, Ros Harvey, stated that Bandt was the unanimous choice for the role of chief executive, following an extensive search involving over 300 candidates worldwide. He indicated that Bandt possesses the necessary vision, courage, and expertise to navigate the pressing challenges of climate change and environmental decline facing Australia. Harvey reflected, “Hard times require bold leadership,” underscoring ACF’s commitment to being a significant and effective voice for nature over its 60-year history.

Current CEO Kelly O’Shanassy will continue until the end of this year, after which Bandt will step into his new position. This leadership change marks a significant shift for the ACF as it strives to meet the urgent demands of Australia’s environmental landscape.
