Australian sprinting star Torrie Lewis continues to impress with her performances on the European circuit as she prepares for the world athletics indoor championships. The 20-year-old talent recently clocked 7.23 seconds in both the heats and final of the 60 metres during the Czech Indoor Gala, finishing fourth against formidable competition, including two runners with the season’s fastest times.
Lewis previously set a new Australian record in 60m with a time of 7.14 seconds at the Belgrade Indoor Meeting in January. Her ability to maintain consistent performance has her on track to potentially become the first Australian woman to break the 11-second barrier in the 100 metres, having already shattered the national record in 2022 with a time of 11.10 seconds.
With her training now based in the Netherlands under renowned coach Laurent Meuwly, Lewis is focused on competing in the upcoming world indoor championships in China before aiming for the world championships in Tokyo later in the year.
Meanwhile, fellow sprinter Lachlan Kennedy, at 21, is making waves in the 60m as well. He broke the national record with a time of 6.43 seconds and continues to demonstrate remarkable speed, solidifying Australia’s position in sprinting. Both athletes have qualified for the world indoor championships set for March 21-23.
