Legionella bacteria can proliferate in warm, stagnant, or inadequately disinfected water, leading to illness when individuals inhale the contaminated mist. According to the Department of Health, 11 of the 12 identified cooling towers have been repaired, and the final one is scheduled for remediation by the end of the week. It was emphasized that the buildings’ plumbing systems are independent of the cooling towers, assuring residents that the outbreak is not linked to their domestic water supply. The cluster of Legionnaires’ disease was first identified on July 25. Acting Health Commissioner Dr. Michelle Morse reported that inspectors are collaborating with building owners to enforce compliance with necessary testing and remediation measures. Encouragingly, the number of new cases has started to decline, suggesting that the sources of the bacteria are being effectively managed.
