Geelong has maintained its slim chances of clinching the minor premiership by defeating the in-form Sydney Swans at the SCG, with a convincing score of 16.15 (111) to 10.8 (68). Entering the match, Sydney had won five of their previous six games, but Geelong’s offensive strength proved too formidable.

Interestingly, Jeremy Cameron, the Cats’ prominent forward, had a quiet game and remained goalless, stalling his quest for 100 goals this season at 79. However, Shannon Neale stepped up with an impressive four goals in the first half, providing crucial early momentum for Geelong.

Sydney began the game strongly, scoring the first three goals, but the Cats quickly took charge by cutting off Sydney’s transition play. Isaac Heeney showed visible frustration throughout the match due to Mark O’Connor’s tagging, leading to multiple free kicks against him and further escalating tensions on the field.

In the final quarter, Geelong exploited Sydney’s dwindling spirits, widening the margin significantly. Fox Footy commentator Gerard Healy remarked that it felt as though the Cats were treating the game like a training drill, showcasing their dominance.

Among Geelong’s standout performers, Neale’s four goals were complemented by contributions from Shaun Mannagh, Tyson Stengle, Jack Martin, and Gryan Miers, who collectively added another ten goals. Patrick Dangerfield also played a pivotal role, registering four assists. Bailey Smith was particularly impressive with 30 disposals, while Sydney’s captain Callum Mills managed 25. Peter Ladhams stepped up in the ruck, achieving 35 hit-outs and scoring two goals, filling in for the injured Brodie Grundy.

This victory keeps Geelong in contention for the top spot on the ladder, depending on Adelaide’s performance against North Melbourne in the final round. The Cats are also well-positioned to secure second place, ensuring they will host a qualifying final if they beat Richmond next week.

Conversely, the Swans will close their season in round 24 with a match against West Coast, which has little at stake for them. Geelong’s professional display at the SCG stands in stark contrast to Brisbane’s recent performance, and these outcomes may significantly impact the final standings as the finals approach.
