In a significant moment for the NRLW, the Warriors’ Matekino Gray and Tysha Ikenasio have both been referred to the judiciary following their sending off during the team’s 20-16 defeat to the Raiders. This marked a historic occurrence as it was the first instance in the league’s history where two players were dismissed in a single match.

The drama unfolded just 24 minutes into the game when the Warriors found themselves reduced to 11 players. Gray was the first to be sent off in the 22nd minute for a dangerous leg-lift tackle on Chloe Saunders, which resulted in a precarious landing for Saunders, who was fortunately unharmed. Commentators were quick to denounce the tackle, labelling it ‘horrific’ and ‘ugly’.

Reflecting on the incident, commentator Ruan Sims pointed out that the tackles demonstrated why strict rules are necessary in the game. Following Gray’s dismissal, Ikenasio was removed just three minutes later for a hip-drop tackle on Monalisa Soliola. Initially, the referee did not penalise her, but intervention from the Bunker led to Ikenasio also being placed on report. Soliola, unfortunately, was unable to continue after the tackle.

Despite facing significant challenges and wet conditions, the Warriors soldiered on with just 11 players. They managed to launch a formidable comeback effort, spearheaded by winger Payton Takimoana, who scored a hat-trick, bringing the team to within four points of the Raiders in the final minutes. Commentator Phil Gould praised their tenacity, calling it “brave.” However, the Raiders held their ground and clinched their first victory of the season.

The match began with an early score from Raiders prop Jordyn Preston, followed by penalties that were capitalised on by Zahara Temara. Canberra extended their lead with impressive plays, while the Warriors struggled to recover after the dismissals. At half-time, they trailed 16-4 but demonstrated resilience despite their depleted squad.

As the Warriors process these significant disciplinary outcomes, the NRLW community reflects on the importance of player safety and the strict enforcement of rules to uphold the integrity of the game.
