Residents of regional north-east Victoria are taking proactive steps to address their community’s needs by collaboratively funding various initiatives, amassing millions of dollars in the process.

Sylvie Huigen recently relocated from Melbourne, over 200 kilometres away, to this region—which encompasses Mansfield, Wangaratta, and the Alpine and Indigo shires. Huigen, who frequently visited the area for weekend getaways, decided to make the move after falling in love with the community.

The area has faced significant challenges from natural disasters, including bushfires, floods, and storms, leading to a loss of life, property, and environmental damage. In 2012, Huigen became instrumental in establishing the Into Our Hands Community Foundation, created in response to dwindling federal and state recovery funding following the catastrophic Black Saturday bushfires of 2009. Recognising that further recovery work was essential, this group of locals sought independence in funding their community’s needs.

The foundation started by collecting donations from local residents, which were directed toward grants for community initiatives. Additionally, a portion of the raised funds is invested for future use, ensuring a financial safety net for the region in times of crisis.

According to Huigen, the region is unique, comprised of distinct communities with their own identities, making collaboration vital for meeting diverse needs. Since the foundation’s inception, over $1.6 million has been raised, supporting 267 projects across various sectors.

For instance, in Myrtleford, the foundation assisted locals in raising more than $20,000 through a phone-a-thon, with proceeds going to the State Emergency Services, community gardens, and a toy library. This ensures that when future disasters occur, there will be readily accessible funds to support community recovery efforts.

Huigen emphasises the pride the townspeople feel in their collective achievements, noting that local support—from residents to councils and businesses—has been overwhelming. Moving forward, Huigen plans to assess the long-term needs of the area to ensure the foundation continues to best serve its community.

In summary, the Into Our Hands Community Foundation exemplifies how regional residents can unite to secure their future, foster community resilience, and respond effectively to crises, showcasing the strength and determination of the North-East Victoria community.
