Khamzat Chimaev has emerged as the new UFC middleweight champion after a dominating performance against Dricus du Plessis, marking one of the most lopsided title bouts in UFC history. The undefeated fighter from Russia decisively outmatched his opponent on Sunday afternoon (AEST), with all three judges awarding him a dominating score of 50-44.
Chimaev previously earned his title shot by defeating Australian fighter Robert Whittaker via submission in the first round last year, leading him to this highly anticipated encounter at UFC 319 against du Plessis.
From the outset, Chimaev showcased his superiority, scoring a takedown just five seconds into the fight. His performance was characterised by relentless aggression and tactical acumen, allowing him to control the octagon throughout all five rounds. Chimaev inflicted a staggering 529 strikes compared to du Plessis’s mere 45, setting a record for the largest strike differential in UFC history. In addition, Chimaev executed 12 takedowns, further emphasising his dominance in the match.
In the aftermath of the fight, du Plessis expressed his admiration for the new champion, stating, “Big ups to Khamzat, he deserves this 100 per cent. He beat me fair and square. I’ll be back, and I’m coming to get my belt back … but for now it’s his and he deserves it.” This acknowledgement highlights the respect du Plessis has for Chimaev’s capabilities and serves as a reminder of the competitive nature of the sport.
With this victory, Khamzat Chimaev solidifies his position as a formidable force in the UFC middleweight division, igniting excitement for his future bouts and the potential challengers he may face as champion.
