Brisbane Broncos secured their place in the top eight with a thrilling 38-28 comeback victory over the Dolphins, featuring a potential try of the year. Despite trailing 28-14 at one point and dropping to ninth on the live ladder, the Broncos rallied back. The half-time score stood at 14-14, showcasing tries from Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow, Kotoni Staggs, Jake Averillo, and Reece Walsh.
Post-break, the Dolphins appeared to be heading for a finals berth, scoring through Trai Fuller and Jeremy Marshall-King, complemented by a penalty goal from Jamayne Isaako. However, a motivating speech from Ben Hunt in the huddle inspired the Broncos to action, with Deine Mariner scoring in the 52nd minute, marking the shift in momentum.
A spectacular try initiated from inside their own half followed shortly after. Walsh broke through before passing to Tyson Smoothy, who assisted Billy Walters. Walters’ kick found Josiah Karapani, who scored, narrowing the gap to just two points. “One of the tries of the season,” exclaimed Mick Ennis on Fox League, as fans erupted at Suncorp Stadium.
Further asserting their dominance, Ben Talty scored after finishing off a clever grubber from Hunt. Staggs then sealed the game in the 68th minute with his try, although he will face scrutiny after being placed on report for a high tackle during the match.
Looking ahead, the Broncos are set to clash with Newcastle on Sunday, while the Dolphins will take on Manly.
