In a remarkable turn of events, the Warriors were left with only 11 players just 24 minutes into their match against the Raiders at FMG Stadium Waikato on Saturday evening. This unprecedented situation unfolded as Warriors second-rower Matekino Gray and centre Tysha Ikenasio were both sent off, marking the first instance in the game’s history where two players were ejected in a single match.

NRLW pioneer Ruan Sims highlighted the seriousness of the incidents, commenting on the nature of the penalties. Gray was the first to depart, receiving a red card in the 21st minute for a dangerous leg-lift tackle on Chloe Saunders. The commentary team quickly labelled the tackle a “horror tackle,” with Brenton Speed expressing concern over the safety of players in the league.

In a moment of sportsmanship, Gray and Saunders shook hands before Gray exited the game. Shortly after, Ikenasio followed suit, sent off for a hip-drop tackle on Monalisa Soliola. Although the referee originally decided against a penalty, the Bunker intervened, leading to Ikenasio’s dismissal and also placing her on report. Soliola was subsequently helped off the field and did not return to play.

As the Warriors faced an uphill battle in wet conditions, they ultimately fell to the Raiders with a score of 20-16. The match kicked off with Raiders prop Jordyn Preston scoring in the second minute, followed by a penalty kick from Zahara Temara after Warriors hooker Capri Paekau was penalised for a tactical infringement. The Raiders further extended their lead with a try from Sereana Naitokatoka and another from Mackenzie Wiki, ending the first half at 16-4 in their favour.

Despite the odds, the Warriors showcased remarkable resilience, spearheaded by winger Payton Takimoana, who scored a hat-trick, bringing the team within four points in the closing minutes. Commentary from Phil Gould praised the bravery displayed by the depleted Warriors side; however, the challenge proved too formidable, allowing the Raiders to secure their inaugural victory of the season.
