Authorities in Sydney’s south-west are on the lookout for arsonists responsible for a firebombing incident at a local supermarket, which compelled the evacuation of numerous residents. This marks the fourth attack targeting this store, and the investigation has escalated to the state crime command, who are now probing potential associations with organised crime.

The Mount Pritchard supermarket was set ablaze around 3 am, just a week prior to its anticipated grand re-opening, causing significant damage, particularly in the back storage area. Fire crews faced challenges gaining access, having to cut through roller doors to extinguish the flames. In total, 25 evacuations were recorded, mainly from nearby properties, as firefighters responded to the emergency.

Eyewitness Christine Zybrands expressed her dismay, stating, “I looked out my window and I could see smoke and I’m just like not again.” The investigation seeks any signs of ignitable liquids that could have been used in the attack.

The supermarket has been targeted multiple times in recent months; the initial incident occurred on April 26, followed by another assault just 11 days later involving a ute that rammed through the front. A similar attack took place on June 6, with vehicles causing extensive damages costing approximately $500,000. Authorities confirmed that although two men were arrested and charged on June 13, it did not prevent subsequent incidents.

In response to earlier attacks, bollards were installed to deter any further ram raids, yet the latest incident involved access through the rear of the store, demonstrating the persistent challenges faced by security measures. Given the repeated nature of these attacks, the investigation into the motives and possible connections to organised crime remains ongoing, as the community seeks reassurance in the aftermath of this unsettling event.
