Eleven Indonesian nationals have admitted to illegally fishing in Australian waters around two uninhabited islands. The group included six crew members apprehended near Ashmore Island in the Northern Territory, while the remaining five were caught during a shark finning operation off Adele Island in Western Australia.

The Australian Border Force (ABF) intercepted the first vessel on July 19, confiscating 40 kilograms of salt used for fish preservation and various fishing gear. The six crew members were detained and later transported to Darwin. Fines were imposed, with the master of the vessel penalised $6,000, one crew member fined $2,000 for being a repeat offender, and the remaining crew members each fined $1,500.

In a subsequent incident on July 23, the ABF seized 66 shark fins, along with 120 kilograms of salt and fishing equipment from the second vessel. Similar to the first, the crew was taken to Darwin after their arrest. One crew member was already in custody for a prior offence and received an additional fine of $10,000. The vessel’s master faced a $9,000 fine, another repeat offender was fined $3,000, while the last two crew members received $1,500 each.

Failure to pay these fines may result in imprisonment for the crew members. Currently, all 11 individuals are undergoing procedures for their deportation back to Indonesia.
