In Australia, the quest for a restful night’s sleep has led many individuals to explore medicinal cannabis as a solution. However, experts caution that the current scientific evidence does not conclusively demonstrate the efficacy of these products.
Jodie Buddle is an example of someone who sought help through a medicinal cannabis trial after grappling with insomnia for years, exacerbated by factors such as menopause and stress. She described the distress of enduring sleepless nights, often leading to concerns about her ability to function safely at work and drive.
Research conducted at the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research in Sydney investigated the effects of oil drops containing cannabidiol (CBD) and the psychoactive component tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). Dr. Camilla Hoyos, part of the research team, explained that twenty participants spent two nights in the lab, receiving either the medication or a placebo.
Unexpectedly, the results showed that participants had reduced sleep when taking the cannabis oil—approximately 25 minutes less than when given the placebo. Additionally, there was a notable decrease in rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, the stage where most dreaming occurs. Dr. Hoyos expressed surprise at these findings, as they had hoped for a promising new treatment.
Insomnia affects around one-third of Australians, driving many to seek unapproved medicinal cannabis via a special access scheme, despite the lack of robust scientific backing. Dr. Hoyos emphasised the need for more extensive research, noting that existing studies have been small and of short duration.
A larger study is currently in progress, testing a synthetic form of CBD designed for enhanced potency, with plans to recruit 500 participants across the country. The goal of this trial is to potentially supply pharmacies with the product for over-the-counter sales, contingent upon meeting health regulatory standards.
In summary, while medicinal cannabis is gaining popularity among those struggling with sleep issues in Australia, the scientific community calls for further investigation to substantiate its effectiveness as a treatment.
