Sydney Roosters coach Trent Robinson has clarified the team’s stance regarding Spencer Leniu following his recent sin binning during a clash against the Dolphins. The match, held at Suncorp Stadium, escalated into a brawl, resulting in Leniu and three other players being sent off. Many observers noted Leniu as the catalyst after he appeared to confront Aublix Tawha, yet he escaped suspension despite facing two contrary conduct charges.

Robinson highlighted that the incident was initially triggered when Tawha pushed Roosters player Sam Walker, indicating that Leniu’s actions stemmed from a desire to protect his teammates. Robinson stated, “I see a guy [Leniu] that’s passionate about protecting his halves,” and suggested that the game may have reacted strongly due to previous instances of foul play that went unpunished. He expressed confidence in Leniu’s intentions, praising his aggressive nature as a beneficial aspect for the team.

Despite the tumultuous moments, Leniu, Naufahu Whyte, and Tawha avoided bans, while Dolphins prop Francis Molo received a one-match suspension for a high tackle. Robinson indicated that the Roosters had previously endured serious injuries resulting from foul plays that went unchecked, which could contribute to players’ frustrations and their subsequent actions on the field.

Robinson affirmed his support for Leniu’s protective instincts but acknowledged the need to manage aggression: “I definitely don’t want Spenny running in from 20 metres, but do I want him protecting our half? There’s a few different ways to do that without getting sent to the bin – but do I want an aggressive Spencer Leniu? Definitely.” He also noted that players are increasingly motivated to defend one another in the context of unchecked foul play.

As the Roosters prepare to face the Bulldogs at Allianz Stadium this Friday, Robinson remains focused on striking the right balance between aggression and discipline within his squad.
