Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has come under fire for potentially bolstering Hamas following the group’s statement expressing gratitude for Australia’s recent recognition of Palestinian statehood. During a media briefing in Brisbane, Albanese was quick to clarify that any two-state solution involving Palestine would exclude Hamas, stating, “I won’t be a cheer squad for Hamas and for its statements.” He emphasised the need to isolate the militant group while advocating for a peaceful resolution, pointing out that 147 countries have already recognised Palestine.

Albanese’s comments came in response to Hamas leader Hassan Yousef, who welcomed Australia’s stance, describing it as a demonstration of political courage and a commitment to justice. The Prime Minister dismissed Hamas’s praise as propaganda intended to mislead the media and the international community. He underscored the consensus among nations like the UK, Germany, and Canada on the importance of isolating Hamas and progressing towards a viable two-state solution.

Albanese firmly stated that Hamas would not have any role in a future Palestinian government, highlighting that the recognition of Palestinian statehood was contingent upon conditions such as demilitarisation and fair elections. Despite this, opposition leader Sussan Ley expressed scepticism, questioning the feasibility of lasting peace given the current circumstances. Ley labelled Hamas’s recognition of Albanese as a “hero” problematic and insisted that the Prime Minister’s conditions appeared to be more rhetorical than practical.

In his response, Albanese reminded Ley that she had previously supported the idea of Palestinian statehood, reiterating that such a recognition would uplift the spirits of people in Gaza and the West Bank. As the situation evolves, the Prime Minister faces the challenge of balancing international relations and domestic expectations amidst a highly complex geopolitical landscape.
