Adam Hunter, a former West Coast AFL player, has tragically passed away at the age of 43. Celebrated for his time with the Eagles from 2000 to 2009, Hunter played 151 matches and played a key role in the team’s 2006 premiership victory. His body was discovered at a residence south of Perth on Wednesday morning, just one day after the passing of ex-Brisbane Lions player Troy Selwood, who was 40.
Originally drafted in 1999, Hunter made his debut in the 2000 AFL season. By 2005, he had secured his position as the first-choice centre halfback. His standout performance in the 2006 grand final included kicking eleven goals during the finals and scoring the decisive goal that clinched the championship, a moment described by West Coast’s former coach John Worsfold as “iconic”.
Despite battling significant knee and shoulder injuries that forced his retirement in 2009, Hunter’s passion for football endured. Worsfold fondly recalled that one of Hunter’s last activities was attending footy training, reflecting his unwavering love for the game. In honour of Hunter, West Coast players wore black armbands during training and observed a moment of silence. The football community mourns the loss of a dedicated player and cherished teammate.
