Pro-Palestinian supporters have criticized Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s recent announcement to recognise Palestinian statehood as a “symbolic” gesture that fails to address the real issues facing Palestinians. The decision aligns Australia with nations like the United Kingdom, Canada, and France, who will collectively acknowledge Palestine at the UN General Assembly this September.

This recognition is contingent on various pledges from the Palestinian Authority, including affirmations of Israel’s right to exist, the disarmament of Hamas, electoral reforms, and educational improvements, as well as ensuring Hamas does not influence the future state.

Ramia Abdo Sultan, an advocate from the Australia Palestine Advocacy Network, has expressed that while the recognition might resonate globally, it doesn’t resolve the urgent and pressing challenges faced by Palestinians. She highlights the voices from her family back home, emphasising their desire for affirmation of their right to existence and self-determination, instead of merely receiving acknowledgements from governments.

Mussa Hijazi, a lawyer with childhood ties to Palestine, describes the Prime Minister’s decision as not only late and symbolic but potentially diverting attention from the actual turmoil occurring in the region. He believes it serves more to placate public outcry rather than effect genuine change, calling it a “half-arsed” attempt.

Albanese’s policy shift reflects growing international support for Palestinian recognition, particularly following France’s UN announcement in late July. However, it places Australia at odds with significant global allies like the United States, which was informed about this impending decision prior to its public announcement.

Critics, including the Palestine Action Group Sydney, allege that the recent move is politically motivated, lacking substance without implementing sanctions or tangible actions to address the humanitarian crisis. Sultan insists that mere formal recognitions do not suffice; there should be real steps to halt violence and ensure the safety of citizens in Gaza.

Recent military plans by Israel to escalate operations in Gaza have drawn alarm from the United Nations, which warns that further actions could result in devastating consequences for the already afflicted population. Reports indicate a rising death toll linked to starvation and malnutrition, with humanitarian conditions worsening significantly.

The desire expressed by Palestinian advocates is for a cessation of hostilities and a focus on tangible humanitarian aid before deliberating potential future resolutions, such as a two-state solution. Until the realities on the ground change, they see current diplomatic gestures as distractions from ongoing crises.
