Hotel Owner’s Battle to Restore Footpath at Heritage-Listed Venue

In a unique twist to the typical desire for lower taxes, Ian Gillings, owner of the Grand Western Lodge in Millthorpe, NSW, is keen to contribute more. Since acquiring the heritage-listed property, established in 1901, in 2020, Gillings has invested millions in its restoration, transforming it into a pristine establishment catering primarily to fly-in, fly-out miners.

Despite the impressive renovations inside, there remains an outstanding issue with the footpath in front of the Lodge, which is uneven and riddled with potholes. Although the problematic path lies directly under Gillings’ balcony, he has discovered that its maintenance falls under the jurisdiction of the Blayney Shire Council.

Gillings expressed his willingness to rectify the matter himself, but the council insists that it is their responsibility. The local council proposes to replace the existing footpath with a similar bitumen surface, a plan Gillings contests due to concerns about water infiltration affecting his basement. Instead, he envisions a more suitable restoration that aligns with the Lodge’s heritage—installing bluestone pavers.

Gillings is not just vocal about his vision; he’s ready to back it financially, offering the council $80,000 for the footpath project. His commitment to enhancing the property demonstrates a strong dedication to preserving its historical value while improving the surrounding environment.

Gillings’s initiative encapsulates a broader sentiment of community and heritage preservation, illustrating how individual efforts can contribute positively to local infrastructure and heritage.
