Former South Australian opposition leader David Speirs has candidly shared his personal struggles following his exit from state politics due to serious allegations related to drugs. He has revealed that the immense pressure he experienced during this period pushed him towards suicidal thoughts. However, these challenges have ignited a newfound resolve in him to support others grappling with similar issues.

Speirs described this phase of his life as exceedingly dark, acknowledging the mistakes he made and their profound consequences. Despite his tumultuous past, he is now focusing on mental health awareness and is set to undertake the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea. He views this journey as an opportunity to engage with a cause that resonates with his own experiences and a chance to advocate for men’s mental health.

With the launch of his fundraising efforts, Speirs has returned to social media, which has sparked speculation about a potential return to public life, particularly as an independent candidate for his former seat of Black. While he expressed a longing for public engagement, he has stated that he is not ready to commit to a return just yet, citing a need for further personal recovery.

At present, Speirs remains focused on navigating the immediate challenges ahead and committing to his community. He emphasised that while he is on the path to rebuilding his life, he does not plan to retreat from society. Speirs expressed his readiness to share his story, learn from it, and possibly help others in similar situations.

For anyone seeking support, Speirs encourages reaching out to Lifeline at 13 11 14 or Beyond Blue at 1300 22 4636.
