David Berkowitz, a former postal worker, was apprehended on 10 August 1977. He was linked to a series of eight shootings in New York City that resulted in six fatalities and injuries to seven others over a span of about a year, starting in July of the previous year.

The perpetrator appeared to have a particular fixation on young women with long, brown hair, prompting many brunettes throughout the city to either cut their hair short or change its colour out of fear.

Berkowitz ultimately confessed to all the charges of the shootings.
