Two police officers, Nathan Black, 28, and Timothy John Trautsch, 30, have been sentenced to substantial prison terms for their brutal treatment of a 48-year-old woman experiencing a mental health crisis. The incident occurred during a welfare check on 22 January 2023 in a cul-de-sac in Sydney’s west. Initially, the officers attempted to assist the woman by getting her into an ambulance, but the situation escalated into an 18-minute assault.

In their violent confrontation, the officers struck the woman multiple times, including kicking her in the head, dragging her by her hair, and using pepper spray excessively—six applications in total, with some sprayed on her face and body. This behaviour has been described by Judge Graham Turnbull as calculated to inflict maximum suffering, highlighting the disgraceful nature of their actions.

The judge noted that while the woman exhibited aggressive and belligerent behaviour, the officers, experienced and fit, should have been able to manage the situation without resorting to such excessive force. He condemned their failure to attempt any non-violent methods of restraint or de-escalation, asserting that the woman would have been better approached with compassion.

Both officers pleaded guilty to various charges related to their actions. Black received a sentence of five years and nine months, with a non-parole period of three years and three months, while Trautsch was sentenced to five years and six months, with a non-parole period of three years. The charges against the woman were dropped after body-cam footage revealed the severity of the officers’ assaults.

The behaviour of the officers has drawn sharp criticism, including from Acting NSW Police Commissioner David Hudson, who labelled their actions as unforgivable and a clear violation of police ethics. Hudson expressed dismay at the incident, calling it one of the worst breaches of core values he has seen in his 40 years of service.

The case underscores serious issues regarding police conduct, particularly in dealing with individuals in distress, and raises questions about appropriate training and accountability within the force. The verdict serves as a stark reminder of the responsibility that comes with a position of authority and the imperative of treating vulnerable individuals with dignity and respect.
