Western United, a football club based in Melbourne and part of the A-Leagues, faces imminent collapse after having its licence to participate in professional football in Australia revoked. This decision by Football Australia’s licensing board follows ongoing issues, including a FIFA ban stemming from a dispute with former player Aleksandar Prijovic, which has hindered the club’s ability to register new players. Furthermore, Western United is reported to be in significant financial distress.
The decision to revoke their licence jeopardises a potential takeover by American investors, which was seen as a way to resolve their current problems. In a statement, a Football Australia spokesperson noted that Western United “failed to meet the criteria required to be granted an A-League licence”, emphasising the need to maintain integrity and stability across the league for all participants.
The club has a seven-day window to appeal this ruling. The situation remains critical as Western United struggles to find a resolution amidst these challenges.
