Gareth Ward, the former Member of Parliament for Kiama, has stepped down from his position in the New South Wales Parliament, just prior to a scheduled vote regarding his expulsion. This resignation was confirmed by 9News.

As a result of his resignation, Ward will no longer receive a salary funded by taxpayers, and a by-election will be arranged for the Kiama electorate to appoint his successor.

Ward is currently awaiting sentencing for the sexual assault of an intoxicated political staff member, an incident that occurred following a parliamentary event in 2015.
