A South Australian company is leading the way in addressing climate change with its innovative eco-friendly beef product. CH4 Global, located on the Eyre Peninsula, has developed a method to significantly reduce methane emissions from cattle by supplementing their diet with locally sourced red seaweed, achieving reductions of up to 90%.

Trade Minister Joe Szakacs has affirmed the effectiveness of this technology, highlighting its verification through testing. Currently, this sustainable beef, labelled as “guilt-free beef,” is already available at Windsor Meats in Malvern, with plans to expand its presence in local restaurants and supermarkets in the near future. Sam Burt from Windsor Meats expressed confidence that the product will resonate with consumers seeking more sustainable options.

Initially, CH4 Global is offering Wagyu beef cuts, but there are plans to broaden their range to include different types of beef products. The company is also looking to expand both nationally and internationally. Szakacs praised the initiative as a notable South Australian innovation.

Discussions are ongoing with a major national supermarket chain to make this eco-friendly beef available across Australia by next year. Additionally, CH4 Global is negotiating with international retailers to supply enough seaweed-enriched feed to support the dietary needs of up to 10 million cows daily. Dr. Steve Meller, a representative of CH4 Global, mentioned that while they are starting with Wagyu, they intend to also offer Angus beef and a variety of products, such as sausages and meatballs.

This revolutionary approach to beef production not only aims to provide a more sustainable option for consumers but also reflects a significant step towards reducing the environmental impact of livestock farming.
