Sharks premiership captain Paul Gallen has highlighted the depth of young talent at Wests Tigers and the injury concerns surrounding Adam Doueihi as potential reasons for the club’s low contract offer to the versatile player. Currently contracted until November, Doueihi received an initial one-year extension worth $350,000, matching his existing salary. However, following an impressive man-of-the-match display in a recent victory over the Bulldogs, the Tigers increased their offer to include an additional year.

Reportedly, the St. George Illawarra Dragons have stepped in with a more competitive two-year deal, offering $500,000 per season, which is believed to be a more accurate representation of Doueihi’s market value. Gallen, speaking on Nine’s 100% Footy, admitted the Tigers’ initial proposal felt like a "slap in the face," particularly considering Doueihi’s skill set and his extensive experience in the game.

After undergoing three knee surgeries, Doueihi has played various roles for the team this season, including halfback, five-eighth, centre, and lock. Despite the interest from the Dragons, he seems inclined to remain with the Tigers if a fair offer materialises. However, with the emergence of Jarome Luai and Latu Fainu as long-term halves options, it appears that Doueihi may find himself in a different position if he stays, potentially as a lock or in the increasingly vital utility spot on the bench.

Gallen remarked on the Tigers’ strategy, noting the influx of younger players at the club compared to the more seasoned roster of the Dragons. He suggested that, from a Dragons perspective, securing Doueihi would be a smart move since he possesses valuable attributes as a player.

Interest in Doueihi extends beyond rugby league; European rugby clubs have also shown enthusiasm for his potential. His cousin, former Wallabies coach Michael Cheika, indicated that Doueihi is evaluating his future options, focusing on what could help him excel rather than merely pursuing the highest financial offer. Cheika mentioned that there has been direct interest from European clubs, recognising Doueihi’s capacity to excel as a fly-half given his skill set, which includes a robust kicking game and the ability to threaten opponents in various ways.

Ultimately, Doueihi’s decision appears to hinge on finding a scenario that allows him to continue playing at his best, whether that’s within rugby league or potentially exploring opportunities in rugby union.
